Citadelle from Cap Haitian
Welcome to the eighth wonder of the world, the Citadelle Laferriere is a must-see when you are in Haiti. We invite you to explore the largest fortress of its kind in the Western Hemisphere; The fortification sits majestically 900 meters above the sea level, absolutely bristling with 350 cannons and mortars, perched high atop Laferriere hill overlooking the bay of Cap-Haitian. The Citadelle was built between1805-1820 by King Henry Christophe, the slave who became king, with the sole purpose of defending the new nation against the French invasion. It is classified as a World Heritage by UNESCO.
The historic tour starts when our proficient Tour Guide picks you up in your Hotel in a 4×4 car, to transport you to the City of Milot where you make the first stop to visit the ruins of the Sans Souci Palace, the Residence of King Henry Christophe. Then you will be driven to the parking car of the Citadelle. The road is paved with limestone; the access to the fortress can be done by walking up to the top for 30 minutes or by horseback riding.
